Tatoo inspired clothing a mistake for Nike

Nike created a line of women's workout clothing that was inspired by tattoos.  It was offensive to the Samoa and was later pulled.  It seems that tattoos used are only worn by Samoan men.  Click here to see the pictures and read the full story.  Further down on that page are 34 other commercials that have been banned.  Do you think that Nike just didn't do the research before creating and selling this product?

  1. I believe that Nike did not do their research. Because if they did they wouldn't have pulled it off the line after finding out it was offensive. I believe they just created an idea they thought would be a hit(which did), but pulled it to not be offensive to international companies. Even though it was offensive, many designs have been taken and made clothing wear.

  2. There is such a broad number of patterns that have become popular in clothing now that are derived from a number of different international cultures. Although, it may have offended this particular nation, I think it stands to reason that many other designs from other manufacturers may as well. However, while it may not be smart to market this design to that nation, I do not believe it was necessary to discontinue it in the u.s. For example, native american styled apparel has become popular since the late eighties. Many in pop culture clothing, but began with a lot of country western clothing. Also, native american jewelry became increasingly common among country western americans, from kokopeli lute players, full headresses, and bone chokers and tourquoise bolos. While some of these items, images, or designs might be offensive to various native american cultures, which there are many, I have heard little to nothing in contest of this trend. It has not been limited or discontinued by any manufacturer that I'm aware of.

  3. It seems like they was in the wrong because they did decide to pull the products but they most likely didn't want to get sued . I don't think they meant to besides they are a big name in the industry so they got to be careful cause that makes them a target to face legal issues. I think they did the right thing they can always change their product a little and it would sell just fine.

  4. My two boys buy this name brand all the time and as a customer I wouldn't stop buying their products due to this situation.
